RAPPING WALLS:

RESEARCHING GRAFFITI AND HIP HOP CULTURE

IN SKOPJE AND MACEDONIA

Skopje Graffiti culture appeared in the 1990s, and since then, it has been developing in parallel with hip hop music, reflecting the city’s changing urban landscape and youth culture. The paper explores the development of Skopje graffiti, its relationship with hip hop, and its role in shaping the city's cultural identity. Graffiti, as a form of street art, is more than scribbles on walls. They are a reflection of social currents, political opinions, and the creative spirit of the young. In Skopje, this phenomenon gained particular importance after the independence of Macedonia, when new freedom of expression found fertile ground in the city's urban landscape.
