FUNDAMENTALS OF HIP HOP AS SUBCULTURE

Defining hip hop as a cultural trend and not as a common musical genre is a regular subject matter of the papers of sociologists and cultural workers researching this phenomenon. On the one hand, there are the record labels, the mass media, and the creation of public opinion on hip hop culture by certain centers of power. On the other hand, there are the messages hip hop conveys, the fight for civil rights, the network of social and moral values it maintains, the norms its members adhere to, and the symbols, functions, and identity that hip hop offers to its followers. The intertwining of hip hop's commercial and economic functioning and its ideology is the ongoing subject matter of the scholarly circles and the academic disciplines dealing with this subculture.
