Before any social change, there is a struggle for social change. Born as a Twitter hashtag, Black Lives Matter has emerged and evolved into a strong alternative to the political isolation that racial justice advocates have faced since the election of Barack Obama. In just two years, the Movement has established confrontation politics, rising voice against the four centuries long racism, racial discrimination, social inequity, and systemic racism. With continued activism, Black Lives Matter helps reverse the counteroffensive against people of color that has defined the long period of the 1960s and 1970s liberation process. It has become a sustained mass struggle, confronting backlash and numerous challenges of Black people in the United States of America while at the same time developing their amazing strengths.
